Have you ever been to a concert or musical where the star performer stepped out on the stage like he or she owned it? They seemed to sing and perform with such bold confidence that the thought of making a mistake was almost impossible.
Can you imagine singing in front of an audience like this with absolutely no fear?
How is it that professionals are capable of this?
There are a number of reasons, and they all have to do with the hidden mindset of the performer.
Pros know they are talented
They tell themselves that they are "the best" so many times over that they make themselves believe it. To us, it may seem conceited or arrogant.
But it's not. You can NOT unleash your incredible talent... you can NOT become the best at what you do if you tell yourself you suck. Change your self talk and your beliefs and your voice will open up like magic!
Pros understand and accept their limits
"Huh?" Didn't I just finish telling you how pros constantly tell themselves that they're the best? So how can they have limits?
Everyone has limits. But that doesn't mean you're not talented. Think of it this way:
A singer with a two octave range who accepts it and makes the most of it will always sing much better than someone who spans four octaves by sheer force.
And a singer who sings beautifully but doesn't possess a super loud belting voice certainly sounds much better that the amateur screaming at the top of her lungs trying to sound like Mariah Carey.
This is tough advice. At least it was for me.
It's fun to sing high notes! It's fun to belt. Hitting super high notes and being louder than anyone makes for great bragging rights.
And maybe you can amaze a few of your friends, but true professionals are far more interested in reaching their long term potential than enjoying a few short term thrills.
Pros NEVER try to imitate anyone else
It's true that everyone has their favorite artists and influences. But elite professionals concentrate their time and energy on working on their own voice and perfecting their unique style. They strive to be the one that others imitate. In fact, there is no greater insult to a true professional than telling them, "Hey, you sound just like (name of pop star)"
So if you want to reach professional levels, then pattern your own thoughts after the pros:
Think empowering thoughts. Work within your vocal limitations. Develop your own style.
Do just these three things and you'll soon be on your way to a lifetime of satisfying, successful singing.
P.S. Do you want to sing with a voice that sets you apart from the crowd? Want to develop a raw edgy sound that delights audiences?
James Wigginton has taught dozens of award winning, professional singers as well as people who are simply passionate about music and want to reach their own potential. You'll never have to feel stuck with any particular musical style again!
Remember, you have 6 months to try it out. Record yourself the first day. Record yourself 6 months from now. If you're not thrilled at the difference, send it back and get back every penny.
